The electro-pop music artist and SpaceX founder have officially called it quits (sort of?) after three years together. Here are the details we currently know.

Though Grimes and Elon Musk initially seemed like a confusing pair when they got together in 2018, the couple soon proved to the public that they actually may be an eccentric match made in heaven. However, that no longer seems to be the case. After three years together, during which they welcomed their son, X Æ A-Xii Musk, into the world, the two have recently announced they’re no longer together — at least not in the traditional sense.

Musk recently told Page Six that the two have separated due to his professional responsibilities with SpaceX and Tesla keeping him primarily in Texas, whilst Grimes’ career requires her to stay in Los Angeles. Due to these circumstances, the two have decided to split — though not entirely.

“We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms,” Musk told Page Six. So though we may not see the two posing for pictures or tweeting at each other anytime soon, they seem to be doing what’s best for both themselves and their son.

So, could we have predicted this split? Well, yes and no. A few weeks ago the two were seen at the Met Gala on seemingly good terms. Though Grimes was left to walk the red carpet solo (where she served major looks), Vanity Fair reports that the two were seen inside the event together, as well as at Musk’s Met Gala afterparty at Zero Bond, one of NYC’s most exclusive clubs. If that wasn’t enough proof that the two were on good terms, Page Six also reported that the two were seen leaving New York together the following day.

The two have also seemed particularly happy in recent months due to the birth of their son, X Æ A-Xii, who they welcomed into the world in May of 2020. Since welcoming a new member to their family, the couple hasn’t been shy about showing off their bundle of joy on social media. Both parents have posted a variety of photos and tweets about “Little X,” the nickname Grimes has given her son according to NME. Their posts range anywhere from Musk tweeting a photo with X just after his birth in May to Grimes showing off his viking-like haircut inspired by her love for Netflix’s “The Last Kingdom” on her Instagram story this past January.

However, despite all the good that’s come to the couple these past three years, there have also been some questionable occurrences. Though social media is what initially brought the two together in 2018 , their social media interactions haven’t stayed the sunniest ever since.

There have been various times between 2018 and 2020 that the two seemed to randomly unfollow each other on Twitter, according to Cosmopolitan. Though uber-observant followers of the couple have called them out for their shady social media behavior, neither Musk nor Grimes has come forward to explain what was happening behind the screens. Though we can only assume this reflected bumps in the road for the couple, they are back to following each other now, so it’s safe to say that, as far as social media is concerned, there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between the now “semi-separated” couple.

That’s pretty much all the information we have for now. Well, other than Grimes telling Page Six that she’ll be “colonizing Europa separately from Elon for the lesbian space commune,” (Europa being the icy planet that NASA is gearing up to explore on SpaceX’s behalf to see if it’s suitable for human life). But we figure she’s kidding — though with Grimes and Musk, you can never be sure.

Though they may not be cohabitating, we’re happy to see that Grimes and Musk are keeping things cordial to co-parent X Æ A-Xii and stay good friends.  We look forward to seeing what’s in store for their future intergalactic endeavors.
