Halloween can still be sick

This Halloween season is bound to look a bit different than the fun Halloween parties and trick-or-treating we’re used to. Despite a pandemic limiting large gatherings and the safety of passing out candy, Halloween can still be an opportunity to display some fun looks for you and a few close friends.

Avatar

With the revival of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” over the past year, fans can dress up as “Aang Gang” or a bender that matches their persona.  A simple costume idea comes in the form of Katara, specifically when she broke off with Zuko in season 3 to find retribution. And, it passes the CDC guidelines!

Among Us

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” isn’t the only thing that captivated audiences these past few months. A hot new game from InnerSloth called “Among Us” made waves in the gaming community and is uniting groups of friends together.

In a group of up to 10 crewmates, two are designated “imposters” whose sole mission is to “sabotage and kill everyone.” This game inspires critical thinking alongside some backstabbing and quick fibbing, but has users playing for hours on end.

The game includes tons of fun costume ideas from colors and companions to hats and skins. This costume idea is also COVID-19 safe!

Tiger King

Another clever idea comes from the Tiger King documentary released early during quarantine.

Joe Exotic instantly made his way into mainstream media with his unique taste in outfits and, of course, his signature mullet. Carole Baskin, his tiger park rival, joined him in the media spotlight with her interesting mesh of pink cat print tops paired with flower crowns.

These colorful rivals make for fun and easy costumes. You might even win in a Zoom costume contest.

Awkward middle schoolers

Staying true to the theme of entertaining shows, Hulu just launched season two of “Pen15,“ a hilarious comedy series following the misfortunes of Anna Kone and Maya Issi-Peters as they navigate middle school.

These two are iconic characters, and their experiences are eerily similar to so many that have lived through the horrors of middle school.

Maya’s signature bowl-cut hair, and Anna’s slouched posture paired with a struggling hairstyle makes for a solid last minute costume. Plus, you can have an excuse to buy a classic best friend necklace again.

Peachy options

The next creative costume comes from the new Netflix horror series, “Ratched.” This series is American Horror Story 2.0. It features an allstar cast and a storyline that keeps you guessing as you peek through your fingers at the gore on screen.

In season one, episode two, a tense power struggle takes place between Sarah Paulson’s character Mildred Ratched, and another nurse that has stolen Ratched’s peach and eaten it in front of her.

With pop culture’s obsession with Sarah Paulson, it’s no surprise that being Paulson’s “peach” became a new niche joke.

TikTok artist Lauren, @poppylaur, demonstrates how to pull off this creative and outrageously fun look.

Halloween will be different this year, but that doesn’t have to stop us from being creative. As for me, I’ll probably be dressing up as a pirate.
