Being a student comes with a lot of work but it also comes with major savings! Here’s a list of some of the biggest ones!
You will never find me one-click purchasing something! There’s always a promo code or a student discount to be found! We work hard! We go to school and have jobs. We can’t and shouldn’t be paying full price for everything! So here’s your cheat sheet for the best student deals to save money!
Electronics & Programs
From what I’ve noticed, the majority of students use Apple products. Whether it’s an iPad, a Macbook or an iPhone, it’s an Apple product. If you’re looking to upgrade your device, be sure to check out the Apple Education side of their website where you can get new or used devices for a cheaper price. No need to verify that you’re a student, simply check the “I am a student” button at checkout!
Best Buy also gives students exclusive deals when they sign up for a “My Best Buy” account and they have an education side of their website where there are the same items for sale and at a lower price!
For the Digital Creators, Adobe offers a 66% discount for students and teachers on Adobe Creative Cloud. Get access to Photoshop, Lightroom, and many more!
Certain carriers also have student plans such as Verizon and AT&T. Verizon gives students varying discounts on phone plans and internet services while AT&T offers savings of up to $10/month per line on AT&T Unlimited Premium.
Music & Entertainment
Whenever I want to catch a last-minute ball game or concert, I love buying resale! Stubhub, which I have used before, will give students 5% back on their purchases. You only live once, get the tickets! Did you see a trailer for a movie you can’t wait to see? Many theaters will offer discounted tickets with a valid college ID varying on location like AMC or Regal.
For music lovers, many streaming platforms have a student premium option for a fraction of the original price. Apple Music also has a student plan that has access to Apple TV+ for $5.99/month after the first month free. You will have access to all genres of music with no ads but you do have to verify that you are a student every 48 months.
Spotify will give you Spotify Premium free for a month and then for $5.99/month but will also throw in access to Hulu for no additional cost! What’s the catch? It’s got ads. Additionally, Peacock cuts its $8 monthly subscription down to $2 per month for students so you can binge that NBC show you miss!
YouTube Premium offers verified students a savings of $6/month after their free one-month trial. After the trial period is over, students can pay $7.99/month.
Shopping
If you didn’t know, APU has 2 Amazon lockers on campus, one on each campus. Amazon offers six months of Amazon Prime free for students. After that period, students are eligible for a discounted rate with all Amazon Prime Student benefits.
For the thrifters, Goodwill, depending on location, may offer discounts to students. For the runners, Nike offers a 10% discount to eligible university students in the United States, who verify their student status. Target provides a 50% discount to verified college students on Target Circle memberships, which unlock a variety of product discounts.
Food
DoorDash offers a Student DashPass Plan at $4.99/month, which is a savings of $5/month.
Grubhub+
Many fast-food restaurants offer a 10% discount to students, although locations and discounted items may vary. You may have to ask about the discount and show a valid college ID. One place I know for sure has a student discount is Chick-fil-A. Ask and you might get a free small drink with any purchase at participating locations. But bonus, the location across the street from East Campus offers APU students a free medium waffle fry with a purchase of a Chic-fil-a sandwich or 8-count nugget every Wednesday!
Insurance
For my commuter students, some insurances offer a cheaper rate! Allstate offers discounted car insurance rates for full-time, unmarried students under the age of 25. Visit Allstate’s website or talk to your local agent to learn more. Geico gives full-time students in good academic standing 15% off of some coverages though you will have to talk to an agent. State Farm offers drivers under 25 discounted insurance if they enroll in State Farm’s driver training program.
Nationwide Insurance and Progressive offer a discount to students under 24 on their car insurance if they maintain a “B” average or higher. Students must be full-time to qualify for the student insurance discount rate. However, Progressive notes that students attending college 100 miles or more from home may also qualify for a discount and discounts vary by state.
You can find additional discounts in the “Student Deals” section of the APU NOW app in the local area! Happy shopping!
