With Christmas break approaching and the chance to explore new places without the burden of homework, try the mission district in San Francisco. San Francisco, Calif. is known for its Union Square and Pier 39 destinations, both of which are rather touristy destinations. But, as a diverse city,  it has something for everyone. A popular part of town for hipsters is known as the Mission District, complete with a park, iconic bakeries, odd shops, and independent bookstores.

This is the Borderlands, an independent bookstore that specializes in science fiction books.

The famous Tartine Bakery and Cafe has been raved about in Oprah Magazine, the New York Times, Vogue Magazine and USA Today. True dessert connoisseurs never pass up the chance to get delicious food from Tartine.

To walk off those sweet treats and for an amazing view, Mission Dolores Park is the place to go to fully submerge yourself in the laid-back and friendly culture of San Francisco.

Get off the beaten path with Paxton Gates, an oddity store that sells taxidermied heads, butterflies, bats and bugs. You’ll pass the crystals to get to the garden of succulents and other beautiful plants.

In Dog Eared Books you’re bound to find the classics, used books of all genres and locally-written novels and poetry.

Don’t forget: The Mission District is filled with art and murals painted on the side of buildings.

If you want to switch it up with your San Francisco trip, or if you want to visit for the first time and aren’t in the mood to be surrounded by tourists, give the Mission District a try.

Two last-minute tips for newcomers: 1) San Francisco is a walking city.
