Swift’s new songs break music records but her new style has received mixed reviews from students

As the ‘old Taylor’ can’t come to the phone right now, the new Taylor makes a statement with upcoming album, “Reputation.” Many students responded with mixed feelings about Swift’s new sound.

Swift previewed her album by dropping the headline single “Look What You Made Me Do” Aug. 25, 2017. This was quickly followed by the audio for a second single, “…Ready For It?”

Since its release, “Look What You Made Me Do” has been a sensation among many platforms, such as iTunes and Spotify. The song hit number one on iTunes and became the most trending song on Spotify during the first 24-hour period.

Sophomore nursing major Karis Acosta expressed her love and interest for Taylor Swift by talking about her favorite song and the reason she enjoys Swift’s music.

“One of her songs, ‘Our Song,’ is the first song that I really knew all the words to. I like how catchy and upbeat it is and how much fun it is to dance to,” Acosta said. “I appreciate the messages that she has in her music. I enjoyed her Fearless concert, which was very inspiring to me.”

Junior communication studies major Juliette Derbyshire is less fond of the new direction the singer has taken.

“I originally loved Taylor Swift’s music, and I love to sing to her songs. So far, her music has been very fun, but I don’t like this new album,” Derbyshire said. “Even though I like the catchy and upbeat aspect of the new song, I do not like the meaning and what she is trying to do. I’m fine with her making a new reputation for herself, but not the way she is doing it through the new song.”

Junior global studies major, Michaela Steiner, is a big fan of Swift’s new music.

“Taylor Swift slays me. The two singles she has already dropped have been amazing,” said Steiner. “I’m a little sad about old Taylor being ‘dead,’ but I think the artistic genius that is going into this new Taylor is going to be spectacular.”

“Look What You Made Me Do” has led Taylor Swift to her fifth time featured number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, breaking the record of first female artist to have a number one solo on the music chart. The music video for “Look What You Made Me Do” currently has over 450 million views on YouTube.

Swift’s second single, “….Ready For It?” has reached number four on the Hot 100 Chart in the U.S. It also reached number one on the Billboard 100 chart, and the audio alone has received over 19 million views on YouTube.

Taylor Swift’s full album “Reputation” is scheduled to drop on Nov. 10, 2017.
