APU women’s basketball pulled off a road upset against Hawai’i Pacific, the only remaining previously undefeated PacWest team.

The Cougars trailed 35-30 at halftime before a 16-2 run two minutes into the second half put APU ahead for good. Azusa Pacific outscored the Sharks 48-32 in the second period.

Junior forward Kelly Hardeman led the game with 20 points for the Cougars. Junior guard Cydnie Jones had an all-around performance posting nine points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in the win.

The Sharks struggled from behind the arc, shooting only 24 percent on the night. The Cougars countered with a 46 percent 3-point shooting night to pull the upset.

Chenise Peone had a double-double (17 points, 17 rebounds) in the loss for HPU.

Men’s Basketball

APU: Troy Leaf 20 pts, 3 ast

HPU: Luke Hagar 17 pts, 8 reb

The Cougars did enough to hold on against the Hawai’i Pacific Sharks, keeping APU atop the PacWest standings.

Nine Cougars scored in the first half en route to a halftime lead of 38-30. The Sharks were never able to overcome this deficit, chipping the Cougars’ lead down to two points in the final minute of regulation but unable to finish the job. The Cougars never trailed in the win.

Senior guard Troy Leaf led the game with 21 points, his seventh straight 20-point game. Seventeen of those came in the second half.

Christian Katuala contributed eight points and nine rebounds while Kevin Stafford went 4-for-6 from behind the arc for his 12 points.

Luke Hagar put up 17 points and eight boards for the Sharks.

Both teams will finish out their island trips Monday against Hawai’i-Hilo before returning to the mainland for a showdown at California Baptist.
