APU couldn’t pull off a win over the PacWest’s top team twice in one season, losing to Hawai’i Pacific 73-71 at home Saturday.

The Cougars fought back from a 45-23 halftime deficit to tie the game in the latter part of the second. The Sharks’ Kylie Huerta’s layup with 2.4 seconds left on the clock broke the tie and sealed the victory for HPU.

Junior forward Kelly Hardeman scored all 17 of her points in the second half to lead the comeback for the Cougars. She also contributed eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Senior guard Katie Powell scored 15 points, making 4-of-8 baskets from 3-point territory.

Morganne Comstock posted a double-double for Hawaii Pacific with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The loss drops APU to 15-9 (11-6 PacWest).

Men’s Basketball

HPU: Luke Hager 12 pts, 7 reb, 3 ast

Azusa Pacific men’s team capped the doubleheader with a 78-50 win over Hawai’i Pacific.

The Cougar men fared very much the opposite of the women, opening the game on an 18-1 run and entering halftime up 41-18.

Hawai’i Pacific in the first half shot just 4-of-25 from the field and only 1-of-13 from behind the arc.

The Cougars cruised in the second half to the win.

Troy Leaf led the game with 16 points, followed by three other Cougars who also scored in double digits, including Christian Katuala with 13. Luke Hager had 12 points and seven rebounds in the loss for HPU.

The Cougars improve to 21-4 (14-3 PacWest) with the win. They remain atop the PacWest standings, tied with Dixie State.
