Coming up to the end of January, it becomes hard to maintain New Year’s Resolutions.  Losing weight or getting in shape is a great goal, but sometimes we need new tactics and inspiration to stay in shape.

Living in the Canyon City of Azusa puts us in a centralized location for many beautiful hikes around the area. However, with the closure of the  infamous hike to the “A”, officially named Garcia Trail, you may have to drive a little farther to get your workout in.

Monrovia Canyon Park is a great place to start. The park is a short 20-minute drive from APU in the city of Monrovia. The waterfall hike is a great one to start out on with just a gradual incline leading you to a small waterfall. The 3-mile round trip trek to the waterfall is covered almost completely by trees that provide great shade for the hike. For more information: http://www.hikespeak.com/trails/monrovia-falls-hike/

The Eaton Canyon Park in Pasadena is located 23 minutes down the freeway. A great beginners’ hike, the 3.5-mile round trip takes you to a striking waterfall. Make sure to come here in the morning to avoid the crowds and the heat!

If you’re looking for a 5-mile loop with an overlook of the city, the Claremont Loop is about 15 minutes away. This loop is not very shaded, so it’s a great hike for that early morning workout.  The incline is a little steeper than that of Monrovia Canyon, but it is a very doable hike. If you’re looking for a more challenging hike, Mount Baldy is the place to go!  The trailhead is just 30 minutes away from campus. This 11.3 mile loop takes you up over 10,000 feet to where you can experience the beautiful views of the rolling mountains. Mount Baldy is the highest summit in the San Gabriel Mountains and a great achievement for any avid hiker.

On your hikes, remember to back some water, snacks and a small first-aid kit to ensure a fun and easy trip.
