Every morning after waking up and rolling over, I clumsily drag each foot out of bed and in front of each other and make my way down the hall, often bumping into walls on the way. I walk into the kitchen and dart right into the corner for my french press and begin my day off right: with a cup of coffee.

I get a lot of backlash for the amount of coffee I drink, so I decided that I would learn a little bit about coffee. That way, even if it’s not good for me, I know what i’m getting myself into.

  1. The caffeine in coffee boosts energy levels.
  2. Coffee increases your metabolic rate, helping burn fat.
  3. It also increases adrenaline levels and helps improve physical performance.
  4. Coffee also includes nutrients such as riboflavin, pantothenic acid, manganese, potassium and magnesium.
  5. Studies also show that people who drink coffee have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  6. Coffee also is said to protect against Alzheimer’s, lower the risk of stroke decrease the risk of some cancers and fight depression.
  7. Some people also say that coffee helps you live longer!
  8. It’s also jam-packed with antioxidants.

Despite coffee being known as such a good thing, there is some talk of negative results.

  1. Caffeine elevates heart rate and does have some effect on heart health.
  2. Stress is also said to increase when drinking caffeine, as it stimulates stress hormones.
  3. Caffeine also affects diabetics and hypoglycemics since it provides a spike in blood sugar.
  4. It also stops the absorption of some nutrients if you drink it too close to eating.
  5. There is said to be some additional problems associated with the male or female exclusively.

My favorite zero-calorie beverage still wins out for me. However, it’s important to remember that coffee is not zero calories when you add your cream and sugar. Adding 2 percent milk and sweetener in your favorite Starbucks grande coffee packs 110 calories!

So let this serve as a warning of the negative effects people see when it comes to coffee so that you may drink and sweeten responsibly.
