Azusa Pacific women’s soccer posted its seventh shutout this season in a 3-0 victory over Academy of Art at home Thursday night.
Senior forward Alyx Williams opened scoring early with a shot from 10 yards out off a cross from senior forward Amanda Hardy in the seventh minute.
The Cougars extended their lead in the 34th minute when Knights’ goalkeeper Rachel Rempe stepped too far out of the goal box, allowing freshman forward Darby Emmons room to send the ball sailing into the back corner of the net from 10 yards out. The goal was assisted by junior forward Haley Fisher.
Despite strong efforts in the closing moments of the first half, Academy of Art lost its final scoring opportunity in the 44th minute when Azusa Pacific freshman goalkeeper Kristin Wilson beat out Kendall Halliburton in the one-on-one.
Fisher scored her first goal of the season in the 81st minute off a ball placed up the middle by sophomore midfielder Haley Williamson.
“Tonight we controlled most of the game,” head coach Jason Surrell said. “I thought Haley Williamson had one of her best games defensively, and in the midfield, she wasn’t allowing them to get to the back line.”
APU held a 21-3 edge in shots taken and a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 6-3-1 in PacWest play (8-7-1 overall). They will host Dominican Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the second of a three-game home stand.
