A timeline of Payne, from early life until his death.

Liam Payne came into the world August 29, 1993 in the United Kingdom. He was born prematurely and with that came health complications, going for check ups until he was four. However, when he got to school, he took a strong interest in running which continued even into his adult years.

Although sports and running was a large interest to Payne, music was what he really had a heart for. It was his passion, dream and true love. In fact, he would go to auditions to be on the “X Factor,” while his mom juggled shifts at her job as a nurse to take him there.

He auditioned for the “X Factor” in 2008, where he was sent home and Judge Simon Cowell told him to get his degree. He came back years later and that’s when his life took off running.

Payne’s rise to stardom started out in 2010 when he reentered the reality show “The X Factor.” It was here he was put into the boy band group, One Direction. Composed of five singers, the members included Payne, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayne Malik and Louis Tomlinson.

Even though the newly formed boy band only placed third, they became known, loved and famous when they released their very first single, “What Makes You Beautiful.”

One Direction was in the spotlight for six years, releasing five albums and having 329 live shows. While this band was still snatching all of the hearts of young girls and all of the money from the girls’ dads’ pockets, the band faced the music. They broke up in 2016 after a farewell tour. Even though this was devastating, each member of the band dove into their solo careers, each experiencing different levels of success.

Payne came under scrutiny due to his relationship with former “X Factor” judge, Cheryl Tweedy, whom he met when he went on as a 14 year old. They began dating in 2016, when he was 22 and she was 32. The couple followed up the year with the birth of their son, Bear, in 2017. They co-parented, sharing most of the parenting responsibilities.

Payne only released one album of his own creation “LP1” which was not widely accepted. Each singer had to find their own identity outside of 1D, and he was struggling to find his. Payne opened up about his mental health struggles in 2019 to “Men’s Health” about how the instant fame was intense and “toxic.“

Having turned to drinking, Payne later went to therapy to try to lessen his reliance on alcohol. With these efforts he was sober for a year. Additionally though, during his career there were points where he battled with suicidal thoughts.

Payne made a YouTube video to give his loyal fans an update on how he was doing after he spent 100 days in rehab. While in rehab he separated from the spotlight and social media which was helpful for his progress.

He appeared in an epsiode of “The dirary of a CEO” podcast where he touched on his suicidal thoughts while a member of 1D. Payne said “There is some stuff that I have definitly never, never spoken about. It was really, really, really severe. And it was a problem.”

Payne started a new relationship with Maya Henry and that was a very rocky relationship. They were engaged twice and ended officially in 2022.

His current relationship was with Kate Cassidy, an influencer who went with him to Argentina on October 2, 2024 to see Niall Horan perform. Their relationship started in 2022 and was documented throughout their social media pages.

During his time of fame, Liam Payne put some of the fame and wealth to good use. He donated his time, energy and money to help the “Food For All” food bank in Camden and helped provide goods to the food banks in Euston. He also sold his clothes to a Depop seller for an organization called ”The Closet.” Many fans remember him for acts such as these.

News broke out on October 16, 2024 announcing the tragic loss of 31 year old Liam Payne. What we know now is Payne had fallen off the balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentin. He  was there to see the performance of his former band mate Niall Horan. The police report announced that Payne succumbed to his internal and external injuries.

There was a phone call by hotel staff to emergency services saying there was a guest who was “overwhelmed by drugs and alcohol… and destroying his room.” The call also said there was uncertainty if he was a danger to himself, but there was a balcony in his room.

A preliminary report stated he had 25 injuries which matched that of a fall from such a great height. It was also noted he may have been partially or fully unconscious at the point of impact. There was a toxicology report that said he might have had some levels of cocaine in his system but there’s not a fully accurate idea yet of how much was in his system when he died.

Investigators also were to follow the idea of “possible involvement of third parties in the events prior to his death.” In Paynes’s room, was broken furniture, medications, alcoholic beverages and narcotics.

As of now we don’t have a lot more information, but the prosecutor is ruling his death as suspicious. Fans and listeners are mourning his death all over the world as we follow along to figure out what truly happened that day.
