While the Grammy’s are just a week away, here is a breakdown of which artists deserve to win their respective categories.

It is that time of the year when not only is the Super Bowl around the corner but the Grammy Award Ceremony is almost here too. While the  Grammy nominees were shared for several categories back in November,  the 66th Annual Grammy Awards will air on February 4. It will be broadcast live from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on CBS and Paramount +.

Here are some of the most noteworthy categories within the annual award show as well as my opinion on who might take home the Grammy this year.

  • Record of the Year
  • Song of the Year
  • Best Music Video
  • Best R&B Song
  • Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song

SZA has the most nominations with nine. She is in the running for Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year to name a few categories. There are a total of eight artists nominated for Record of the Year.  The majority of the nominations for Record of the Year are from the pop genre.

The following artists are nominated for the Record of the Year:

  • Billie Eilish – “What Was I Made For?” [From the Motion Picture “Barbie”]
  • Boygenius – “Not Strong Enough”
  • Jon Batiste – “Worship”
  • Miley Cyrus – “Flowers”
  • Olivia Rodrigo – “Vampire”
  • SZA – “Kill Bill”
  • Taylor Swift – “Anti-Hero”
  • Victoria Monét – “On My Mama”

After reviewing the various records that are nominated, I think Miley Cyrus should win the Grammy for Record of the Year with“Flowers”. The song has a catchy tune to it when Cyrus sings the line, “I can buy myself flowers I can hold my hand.” It is a song about the emotional state after a breakup. The song is catchy and sends an encouraging message that love starts with you and how you treat yourself.

Miley Cyrus’s song “Flowers” was No.1 on the Hot 100 at the start of 2023, which was her second No.1 after “Wrecking Ball” that came out in 2013. “Flowers” has a high probability of winning the Grammy award since it was the top song for the Hot 100.

The next category is the Song of the Year. The following artists are nominated:

  • Billie Eilish – “What Was I Made For?” [From the Motion Picture “Barbie”]
  • Dua Lipa – “Dance the Night” (From Barbie the Album)
  • Jon Batiste – “Butterfly”
  • Lana Del Rey – “A&W”
  • Miley Cyrus – “Flowers”
  • Olivia Rodrigo – “Vampire”
  • SZA – “Kill Bill”
  • Taylor Swift – “Anti-Hero”

Even though I like Cyrus’s song “Flowers,” in my opinion, Billie Eilish should win the   Grammy Award for Song of the Year for her song “What Was I Made For?”  It is an emotional song that makes you stop and listen to its melancholy yet captivating lyrics. “What Was I Made For?” was part of the soundtrack for Barbie which gave it huge exposure.

Billie Eilish won the best original song for Barbie’s “What Was I Made For?” at the Golden Globes earlier this month which increases the chance of Eilish taking home the Grammy as well.

Another category is the Best Music Video and the following artists are nominated:

  • The Beatles – “I’m Only Sleeping”
  • Billie Eilish – “What Was I Made For” [From the Motion Picture “Barbie”]
  • Kendrick Lamar – “Count Me Out”
  • Troye Sivan – “Rush”
  • Tyler Childers – “In Your Love”

I think Eilish should win the Grammy Award also for the best music video. Not only is Billie Elish’s song “What Was I Made For?” emotional and captivating but the music video is also well-made and unique by showing Eilish in a 1950s yellow dress putting doll clothes in a mini-doll closet.

The song is about Eilish questioning what her purpose is in general hence why it is titled, “What Was I Made For?” I interpreted the music video showing Eilish in a perfect dress all dolled up and hanging mini-doll clothes as that she has to appear perfect to the public since she is a celebrity. When the wind starts to blow along with the rain coming down it causes her to struggle to put the clothes in the toy closet. That could symbolize her struggling with fame and finding her purpose in life.

The music video is unique with its symbolism and deep meaning behind the song and it should win the Grammy Award for the Best Music Video.

The next category is the Best R&B Song and the following artists are nominated:

  • Coco Jones – “ICU”
  • Halle – “Angel”
  • Robert Glasper Featuring Sir & Alex Isley – “Back to Love”
  • SZA – “Snooze”
  • Victoria Monét – “On My Mama”

Each song from the category has a different R&B rhythm to it and my favorite song from the category is “Snooze” by SZA.  I liked the song when I first heard it and it has a catchy and fun tune to it, especially when SZA sings the line “I can’t lose when I’m with you.” It’s the kind of song you blast during a weekend late-night drive with your friends.

The last main category is the Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song. The following artists are nominated:

  • Blessing Offor – “Believe”
  • Cody Carnes – “Firm Foundation (He Won’t)” [Live]
  • For King & Country Featuring Jordin Sparks – “Love Me Like I Am”
  • Lauren Daigle – “Thank God I Do”
  • Lecrae & Tasha Cobbs Leonard – “Your Power”
  • Maverick City Music, Chandler Moore & Naomi Raine – “God Problems”

All of these songs are well-made but in my opinion “Firm Foundation” by Cody Carnes deserves to win the Grammy Award.  The lyrics are encouraging, uplifting and biblical. The performance engages the audience and feels personal watching it as if you are there watching in person. “Firm Foundation” also was the Top 20 for Mediabase Christian Audience Charts and Billboard Christian AirPlay.

On February 4 we’ll find out which artists will win for each category. Which artists do you think should win a Grammy Award?
