Next time you’re craving chicken and waffles, be sure to give this cozy place a try.

Recently, a group of friends and I went to a chicken and waffle house called Day Day’s BBQ & Waffle House, a soul food mom-and-pop shop in Pomona off of Holt Ave. My experience was enjoyable and memorable.

Day Day’s BBQ & Waffle House was not packed when I arrived. The waffle house was small, cozy and vintage inside. When you step inside it feels like you’re about to have a home-cooked meal in somebody’s house.

The interior seemed like they kept the same decorations and arrangement since the 1980s. There was a giant Kool-Aid statue at the front, the booths were checkered and they had vintage portraits on the walls of Sarah’s hamburgers and Garleen’s Jazz Celluar. Additionally,  it was small inside— about the size of a kitchen and a living room combined.

The prices of the food were reasonable — not cheap nor too expensive. For example, the Fire Captain’s combo and the Dizzy Izzy both cost $17.95. If you want something more affordable, you could also get Carmen’s Snack for $9.50, which consists of catfish or red snapper with steak fries and hushpuppies.

I ordered Grandma’s Pang’s Southern Fried Chicken for $16.95. The plate was delicious and flavorful and had fresh ingredients. The plate came with three pieces of fried chicken and a choice of two sides. I chose the macaroni and cheese and candied yams. The portions were very generous making it worth the $16.95.

The main dish came with a huge chicken breast, thigh and drumstick. The fried chicken was well seasoned and crispy. The macaroni and cheese was perfectly gooey and cheesy and the yams were warm, sweet and melted in my mouth.

My friend ordered the Dizzy Izzy. The plate was $17 and came with the same items as mine but came with a waffle on the side. The waffle was a hearty portion and was sweet and slightly crispy. The powdered sugar, butter and syrup on the waffle tasted delicious with the chicken.

My other friend ordered Carmen’s Catch for $14.95. The plate came with red snapper, catfish, hushpuppies and two sides. My friend chose the macaroni and cheese and candied yams for the sides. I tried a piece of the catfish with tartar sauce and it was very crispy but I prefer the fried chicken instead.

Overall, the waffle house serves substantial portion sizes that can easily be shared or taken home as leftovers. Also, the menu has a variety of different dishes to choose from, such as fried chicken, hot links and a variety of meats.

Day Day’s BBQ & Waffle House also has several breakfast items, such as the James Jr., which includes Louisiana hot links served with grilled potatoes or grits, two eggs and a choice of bread. Another breakfast served there is Ron C’s Seafood Combo, which consists of red snapper, fried catfish, Cajun fried shrimp and fried oysters with a choice of two sides and hushpuppies.

Sweetest of all, Day Day’s BBQ & Waffle House serves a variety of southern desserts such as banana pudding, peach, apple, cherry cobbler and sweet potato pie. I didn’t try the desserts but plan to the next time I go there!

The customer service at the restaurant was attentive and the staff was friendly. Our waiter frequently asked us if he could get us anything. I recommend students try this spot for the tasty soul food and cozy atmosphere. There is only one location for Day Day’s BBQ & Waffle House since they’re a mom-and-pop shop.

Overall, Day Day’s BBQ & Waffle House has flavorful food, attentive service, and reasonable prices. If you are near Pomona, check it out and try the variety of soul food and desserts they have to offer.
