Students left alarmed and unsettled after reports of a homicide suspect being spotted in Azusa started to circulate on the APU Now app and news outlets.

On the night of Feb. 27, APU’s Department of Campus safety sent out an email to students about the news of a potential homicide suspect being in the Azusa area. While Campus Safety could not confirm the validity of the suspect’s sighting, the department confirmed that the man pictured in the police report is a homicide suspect.

Campus Safety followed up on their email with a post on APU Now. In the post, the department shared that the suspect has been identified as Pete Renteria, 29, and provided a link to San Bernardino police department’s report.

This is the order of events according to the San Bernardino Police Department, SBPD:

On Jan. 30, Chino Hills Sheriff Station deputies responded to a report that there were possibly deceased people in a house in Montclair, CA. The police found Sonia Ramirez, 68, George Ramirez, 72, and David Ramirez, 43, dead upon arrival.

After finding that each victim was fatally shot by a gun, the case was ruled as a homicide.

On Feb. 17, detectives confirmed the suspect to be Pete Renteria. While Renteria’s whereabouts were unknown, the police department shared that the victims were family members of Renteria.

Feb. 21, SBPD released a photo of Renteria and are asking for help from citizens if they spot him.
