With Halloween coming up in a few short weeks, here are some classic movies to watch.

Spooky season is the best time to curl up under a blanket with some candy and popcorn and binge-watch some Halloween classics.

There are a few different categories of Halloween movies. You have the comedy, which is a good mix of creepy and humorous. Then, there are the movies we watched when we were younger that still hold a place in our hearts. Last comes horror movies that will leave you with nightmares for days.

To start out this list, let’s discuss the classic comedy and creepy combination.

Ghostbusters

This film’s jingle may never leave your mind. Who ya gonna call? “Ghostbusters,” filmed in 1984, is a classic screenwrite involving ghosts, demons and one giant Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. This perfect-fit cast adds humor in their every line. You can catch this movie on Hulu.

The Addams Family

Our next movie is about a family in one spooky-filled house (not to mention another fantastic jingle). “The Addams Family,” filmed in 1993, is a mix of jokes, bizarreness, a lovely cast and a gothic style all mixed together in a cauldron. The family dynamic is truly like no other. This movie is available to watch on Amazon Prime.

Beetlejuice

This next film in this category — and don’t you dare say his name three times — that’s right, it’s “Beetlejuice,” filmed in 1988. Along the same lines of a unique family team, this film follows those of the undead in the same house as a new family on the block. Hilarious casting, good music and one freaky dude, nothing in this film is normal but it checks all the creepy and comedy boxes. You can stream Beetlejuice on HBO Max.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The final movie in the creepy yet funny category is “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” This musical was produced in 1975. In this cult classic, two lovebirds find themselves in a creepy mansion with residents who definitely fit into their own persona, to say the least. One mad scientist, a biker, a creepy butler and the latest creation. Find this movie on Hulu.

Sliding into the next category are the films we watched when we were younger but still hold in high regard.

Casper

To kick off this category is a movie filmed in 1995 about a friendly little ghost. “Casper” inhabits a house when a ghost specialist comes in to communicate with the spirits, along with his daughter Kat. Casper and Kat become friends and ensue chaos. You can meet Casper on Hulu.

Hocus Pocus

We can’t forget about the kids and the three witches in “Hocus Pocus” and the new release of Hocus Pocus 2. This film was a classic must-watch as a kid and a great film to watch this season of Halloween. The first film was released in 1993 and the new one this year. Relive the childhood excitement on Disney+.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

Speaking of reliving childhood films, the adorable Snoopy and his friends were always a must-watch. It got us in the mood to visit a pumpkin patch, carve up a pumpkin and go trick-or-treating.It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” is a 1966 film that both children and adults know and love. This film is on Apple TV for your viewing pleasure.

Finally, the last category is horror films that will tiptoe their way into your dreams to haunt you.

Nightmare on Elm Street

Lock your doors and say goodbye to sweet dreams because Freddie Kruger is coming with his knife fingers to haunt them. The terrifying movie, “Nightmare on Elm Street,” filmed in 1984 is a great Halloween movie on HBO. The spine-chilling theme song will play on the back of your head as you prepare to fall into your slumber.

Frankenstein

Nothing says Halloween horror movies more than a 1931 black-and-white, horror sci-fi film like “Frankenstein.” A mad scientist assembles limbs and pieces from the deceased and uses them to create a monster of his own with the help of his strange assistant. The monster escapes and wreaks havoc on the members of the town. You can find this film on Amazon Prime.

Halloween

Another great film is “Halloween,” produced in 1978. This movie is the definition of Halloween gone wrong: an escaped patient from a mental ward goes on a killing spree of a teenage babysitter and her friends whilst being hunted down by his psychiatrist. Micheal Myers is well amongst a variety of ages, and this movie is on Amazon prime.

IT

If you’re wearing a yellow raincoat, beware of clowns. “IT,” made in 2017, is a film that will strike fear into all watchers. If you are already afraid of clowns, this film may not float with you. With some humor and a little cheesiness, this is a great film. The best place to watch is on Netflix

Scream

The final movie is the fantastic “Scream,” made in 1996. This movie follows the same line as Halloween with a slasher-like style. It is well known by many for its amazing cast, quotable lines and the iconic, Ghostface mask. The best place to watch this is on Amazon Prime.

Embrace the spooky season as it is arriving, but beware of the sugar high and enjoy the movie watching.
