A review of week five of “The Bachelor”

Another week meant another dramatic mess on “The Bachelor.” This week’s episode was filled with plot twists and girls screaming at each other in order to win Peter’s heart.

During week five, Peter had to deal with drama after Alayah’s return. He ended up sending her home after several of the girls pulled him aside and helped him see her true colors. Three more women, who were pretty irrelevant, were also sent home. Then Peter and the girls were off to Costa Rica in order to see if Peter could find his true love.

Leah Fraley, a freshman public relations major, shared her thoughts on the episode.

“I think it’s really cool that they got to travel to Costa Rica as their first international destination,” Fraley said.

Although many of the girls were relieved to be drama-free after Alayah’s departure, this didn’t last too long before someone else began stirring up drama. It wasn’t more than 20 minutes into the episode before Tammy started rumors about Kelsey being an alcoholic and popping pills on the show.  This led to more complaints to Peter on both sides.

Peter seemed unsure of how to handle the drama and seemed to believe whatever he was told in the moment. When Tammy would talk to him, he seemed to believe her. When he spoke to Kelsey, he was on her side.

There were many mistakes made on Peter’s part during this episode alone. For example, the fact that he chose to keep Tammy makes me question why he was ever chosen in the first place. Nanette Steenstra, a freshman applied math major, shared her thoughts on the situation.

“Peter only kept Tammy because she creates drama and the producers probably forced him to keep her to keep the show interesting,” Steenstra said.

Peter also decided to keep Kelsey, known as “the crybaby.” Kelsey was often seen crying by the pool alone because she was upset that Peter went on dates with the other girls after her one-on-one with him. She has also been known to hold grudges against several girls on the show, especially after the champagne fiasco from week two.

Kelsey dear, please understand the entire premise of the show is for the bachelor to go on dates with all the women there. If you don’t like it, go on Tinder.

Peter also decided to let Lexi go, sending home one of the few level-headed and drama-free girls on the show. She was always there for her fellow contestants and had a bright personality. This was one of the biggest mistakes that Peter has made thus far.

“I was really bummed that he sent Lexi home because she’s really pretty and cool,” Steenstra said.

The issue with Peter is that he claims he’s looking for a wife, but I’m not sure that his intentions are that black and white. If he truly had the girls’ best interest at heart, he wouldn’t continuously take part in the drama and fuel it.

For example, in this week’s episode, he cancelled the second cocktail party because he knew what his decision would be on who would be able to stay. If he truly cared about the girls, he would still try to get to know them through the cocktail party and pull them aside to chat. Yet, because he was so worried about who would go home, he neglected to get to know some really amazing girls.

Meg Sweeney, a freshman liberal studies major, is also fed up with Peter’s actions.

“I am so frustrated with Peter’s choices,” Sweeney said. “He seems complacent and needs to start taking charge of the situation.”

On the other hand, a stand-out contestant on the show so far is Madison. She seems to be there for the right reasons and never takes part in any of the drama that occurs in the house. She has a sweet, likeable personality that appeals to many. Peter seems to have taken a liking to her, as she was one of the first girls to be given a rose at both ceremonies.

Will Peter ever take charge and put the drama to rest? Will Tammy continue to stir up drama? Will Kelsey ever stop crying? We’ll find out as this season of “The Bachelor” continues.
