The 1975 ranked No. 1 on the UK Billboard chart with their sophomore album, “I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it” on February 26. The UK-based group released three singles sporadically before releasing the full album including, “Love Me”, “Somebody Else”, and “The Sound” which all ranked in the Top 13 Billboard singles.

The 1975, an‘80s pop rock band, pulled from inspirations such as David Bowie, INXS, and Duran Duran to create this second album that is reflective of the honest struggles of fame, money and relationships. Lead singer Matty Healy told NME magazine in an interview, “It’s everything for me that I’m kind of missing from pop records at the moment. It’s a recognition of our disappointment with the state of current pop music.”

The album does an incredible job of balancing serious topics and clever lyric writing, with catchy, upbeat pop tunes and tracks to dance along to. “The Sound” is one example. This track talks about a conceited, one-sided relationship, but the beat is far from somber.

Another track, “Love Me” is about the selfie culture and the struggles of being self-involved when exposed to fame. Healy went on to say in the interview, “I just wanted to make something truly representative of the time. Something truly post-modern, truly ambitious in the right way, that wasn’t controlled by fear. There’s no space for democracy in art.”

While this UK boy band is keenly aware of the temptations of fame, sex, and money, the popularity of their second album is just the start to their rapid success and fame.

The album is available on iTunes and Spotify. The songs may contain explicit language so listen with discretion.
