The women’s basketball team cruised to a 91-54 win Saturday over Holy Names in its PacWest home opener. The Cougars were led by junior forward Kelly Hardeman’s 30-point performance, as she became the 23rd Cougar of all time to reach 1,000 career points.
Azusa Pacific took an early 16-3 lead and stretched that to a commanding 48-18 lead by halftime. The team never gave up its 30-point lead and rolled to victory in the second half.
Junior forward Lauren Glister scored 20 points for the Cougars. The Hawks were led by sophomore Holly Shafer, who registered 12 points in the loss.
APU improves to 8-5 (4-2 PacWest) on the year and will be back in action Jan. 10 at home against Dominican.
Men’s
The No. 15-ranked men’s team also took a victory over Holy Names, 94-70. The win extended the Cougars’ winning streak to 12 games, currently the second-longest one in Division II and tied for 11th best in school history.
Leading the charge for APU was senior point guard Robert Sandoval. His 12 points put him over the 1,000-point mark for his career.
Seven Cougars recorded double-digit points in the dominating win.
Azusa Pacific led 48-28 at halftime, including 26 points in the paint. The team outscored the Hawks 46-42 in the second half.
APU is now 13-1 (6-0 PacWest) and sitting atop the conference. The Cougars are back in action Jan. 10 when they take on Dominican at the Felix Event Center.
