The Azusa Pacific men’s tennis team dominated Point Loma 9-0 on Friday, April 4 in its second matchup of the year, after the Cougars narrowly defeated the Sea Lions 5-4 in their first meeting of the season Feb. 7. This is the Cougars’ fourth sweep this season.

Senior Freddy Wilkens and sophomore Tomas Aranguiz opened the sweep with an 8-3 win over sophomore Martin Blaho and senior Kaptan Kaster at No. 2 doubles. The freshman doubles team of Alan Leahy and Pascal Engel improved to 2-1 as partners at No. 3 doubles as they defeated sophomores Daniel Milliken and Kevin McKelligan 8-4. At the No. 1 spot, sophomore Jan Meyer and junior Gary Yam remained undefeated, beating seniors Brooks Baldinger and Michael Zablan 9-7. Meyer and Yam are 5-0 as a pair this season.

No. 5-ranked Meyer opened singles play for the Cougars with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Baldinger at the No. 1 spot. No. 7-ranked Wilkens then defeated Blaho 6-2, 6-1 for his 16th straight singles win. Engel played his third match at No. 3 singles this season and defeated Zablan 6-2 in both sets to improve to a 2-1 record at that spot.

Leahy hopped over the .500 mark with his win at the No. 4 singles spot. He beat Kaster 6-1, 6-3 to improve to a 3-2 record at that spot. Aranguiz returned to the No. 6 singles spot on Friday and continued his success with a 6-0, 6-1 win over McKelligan. Aranguiz is now 8-2 at No. 6. Yam sealed the sweep over the Sea Lions with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 victory against Milliken.

With the sweep, Azusa Pacific is now 14-5.
