Azusa Pacific completely dominated Chaminade 21-0 in the first game, tying the program’s single-game scoring record and securing a four-game sweep by defeating the Silverswords 6-3 in the final game of the series on Thursday, March 27.

“Nobody in our dugout knew any records were being broken, and we didn’t find out until after the game,” head coach Carrie Webber said. “A performance like this is indicative of what this team is capable of doing on any given night.”

The Cougars also tied the program record for most RBIs in a game with 20. Sophomore catcher Madison Hernandez led the way, going 4-for-7 with five RBIs throughout the night, and freshman third baseman Nicki Sprague went 6-for-7, adding four RBIs and raising her batting average to .550. Junior center fielder Renae Chappelle had three RBIs along with two home runs.

On the defensive side, sophomore pitcher Narissa Garcia tossed three straight innings without surrendering a hit to Chaminade before they Silverswords finally got a hit in the fourth inning.

“[We have] a quick learning curve, and [we’re] a very smart softball
team that makes adjustments very well,” Webber said. “That’s the
difference between struggling through a game and winning two games in a
day or all four games of a series. This is already a good team, and I
think they’re only going to continue to improve and make an impact in
this conference.”

With the sweep over Chaminade, the Cougars improve to 26-11 overall and 14-8 in Pacific West Conference play, placing them two games behind second-place Dixie State.
