Friday’s win against Fresno Pacific pumped up the Cougars as the Azusa Pacific women’s tennis team recorded its third sweep of the season in a 9-0 win over Hawai’i Hilo Saturday, March 29.

In the sweep, the Cougars only lost one set to the Vulcans. APU did not lose a game in seven sets, one of those sets ending after only one game.

After showing success at No. 1 doubles the day before, senior Emily Harris and freshman Natalie Johnson teamed up once again and defeated senior Morissa Kahakui and junior Rachel Sugiyama in straight games, 8-0. This makes Harris and Johnson’s record as a duo 2-0.

Senior Stephanie Quan and junior Bethany Duval teamed up for the first time this season at No. 3 doubles and earned a victory over junior Megan Fujitake and freshman Shanise Kaaikala, 8-2. Junior Danae Ingwaldson and sophomore Lindsey Yeom were paired at No. 2 doubles again, just as they were against FPU, and they defeated freshman Trixie Croad and sophomore Chelsey Sato, 8-5.

Johnson opened up singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 rout over Sato at No. 2 doubles. This win boosted her record to 14-4. Harris followed with 6-1, 6-0 over Croad at No. 1 singles, earning her 10th win of the season. This marks her fourth 10-win season in as many years.

Ingwaldson defeated Sugiyama 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot and Koetterheinrich beat Fujitake 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot. Yeom defeated Kahakui at the No. 4 spot, but lost set two (6-3, 2-6, 1-0) in the only set the Cougars dropped all day. Duval closed the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kaaikala.

After the sweep, Azusa Pacific will head to Los Angeles to face Cal State L.A. on Monday, March 31. The Cougars will then head home for their final three regular-season games.
