For some people, the official start of fall is the discoloring of the leaves. For others, it is the return of the Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks. For me, it’s the opening day for the Los Angeles County Fair.

Having spent my entire life in Southern California (mainly in the Inland Empire), it is an annual tradition of mine to attend the L.A. County fair, which is why it is such a blasphemous insult when I hear out-of-towners, or locals mention that they have not gone to the fair and/or have no desire to.

Some skeptics claim that they see no fun in going; that it is all a waste of time and money, but the fair presents many exhibits that appeal to almost all of our senses from sinful food, nausea-inducing rides, to retail shopping.

If you attend during the day, you can expect a more tame and family friendly experience such as pig races, kiddie carnivals, quintessential petting zoo exhibits, and various themed attractions (this year features a Star Trek exhibition!)

For the more adult crowd, the fair offers music concerts, wine and beer tasting, horse races, art galleries, food competitions, flower and garden pavilions and much more.

But if there is absolutely one thing you cannot miss while attending the fair, it is the deep fried goodness that any county fair is notorious for. Deep fried twinkies, Klondike bars (how do they do that!?), and avocados rank as runner ups, but this year’s most popular dessert had to be the deep fried Snickers sundae.

“It’s even better than it sounds,” said Jennifer Farris, a happy and satisfied customer, “it’s like heaven!”

The Los Angeles County fair is open from Wednesdays-Sundays with various hours of operation and extensive amounts of offered discounts for rides and admissions.
