Azusa Pacific University Women’s Tennis team defeated Westmont University to advance to 16-1 on the season.
A 7-0 victory against Westmont College resulted in the Cougars’ 16th win of the season. The achievement continues their season of success with 15 straight victories to a near-flawless 16-1 record.
Beginning with doubles, graduate, and sophomore Julia Jordan and Vini Bautista made quick work of their opponents at No. 2 in a 6-0 outcome. The play in court No. 1 was nothing short of impressive as Madison Kane and Miruna Tudor collectively ended with a 6-2 performance, clinching a doubles point for the Cougars.
The same dominance transitioned into singles with the team concluding with multiple comfortable leads.
No. 1 saw Kane eclipse a 6-0 and 6-0 score which was then followed by Bautista coming out on top with a 6-0 and 6-2 score at No. 3. Jordan was responsible for securing the match, overcoming her opponent with a 6-1 in the first set followed by an impressive shutout 6-0 score in the second set.
The remaining Cougars finished with ease as well with sophomore Shannele Lopez getting the upper hand with a 6-1 and 6-3 score at No. 5 followed by senior Hannah Mulbarger against her opponent with a score of 6.0 and 6-2 at No. 6. Tudor wrapped up the match taking the first set by 6-2 count followed by a dagger 6-0 in the second set at No. 4.
“They’ve been working on different things, especially in doubles, working as a team, and finishing points constantly. I thought they did that really well today” said head coach Mark Bohren.
The chemistry and overall cooperation from the team were on display in the team’s victory and entire season as encouragement, communication, and execution have been a staple in the team’s approach.
“It’s a long season so we’re taking it one day at a time, one match at a time, one practice at a time, we’ll see how it ends up but at this point, we’re continuously getting better” Bohren stated.
Sitting a 16-1 record, the season for the team has been exceptional as they inch closer to a championship to bring home to Azusa Pacific University.
The Cougars’ next matchup is on Wednesday, April 3 at Cal State LA as they aim to transfer the momentum from this match and strengthen their record on a successful season.
