Celebrities went big with their red carpet looks for the American themed Met Gala.

The biggest night in fashion made its return on Monday, and the world’s top celebrities went big with their looks surrounding the theme: In America: A Lexicon of Fashion. The Met Gala, an event put on by Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue,  brings together athletes, actors, politicians, singers and even influencers to celebrate the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual fashion exhibit.

The Met Gala always features a few celebs as co-chairs of the event, this year’s being Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman and Naomi Osaka. All four of these stars are under the age of 25.

Below are some of the most notable looks of the night.

At just 19, Eilish is the youngest co-chair in Met Gala history — and this is her first year attending. She wore an Oscar de la Renta dress on the condition that the brand would go completely fur-free, to which they agreed. The look surprised fans because it contrasts her usual masculine-grunge style. Eilish told Vogue that the look was inspired by the Holiday Barbies she had growing up.

Model Anok Yai easily made the best-dressed list in this dress by designer Oscar de la Renta. Yai’s outfit, like many other guests that night, was a tribute to “Old Hollywood” glam, specifically to the 1920s.

Timothée Chalamet mixed high fashion with leisurewear, surprising many by sporting high-top Converse to the Met.

Jennifer Lopez went with a cowboy-inspired look by Ralph Lauren. Lopez walked the carpet solo but later on stayed close by the side of her resurgent fling, Ben Affleck.

One of the more polarizing outfits of the night was Kim Kardashian’s head-to-toe black bodysuit. Some thought it was a tribute to her ex-husband Kanye West’s new album Donda, which has an all-black album cover. Others said it represented the impact that Kardashian’s figure has had on American culture and the fashion world. The look quickly became the focus of many memes on Twitter.

Frank Ocean had one of the more bizarre looks of the night, not because of his outfit, but because of his accessory — a bright green robot baby. Ocean told Vogue that the baby was inspired by “movie magic,” which was displayed as it moved its arms and head around in a lifelike manner.

Kim Petras was also the subject of many memes in an outfit that featured a 3D horse head as the focus. When asked about the look Petras said she was “repping all horse girls and horse humans here today.”

Model Iman arrived in a jaw-dropping headdress and skirt covered with feathers. The look was designed by Dolce & Gabbana along with Harris Reed, who is only 25 years old.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attended the gala in a white dress with the words “Tax the Rich” in big bright red letters on the back. Ocasio-Cortez told reporters she wanted to bring the conversation of a fair tax code to all classes, and not just the bottom and middle class. While some loved the bold move, others thought the move was hypocritical, considering the event cost $35,000 a ticket.

Rihanna has consistently had some of the best Met Gala looks in recent years, so fans were excited to see what she would do for this year’s event. She was the final celeb to walk the carpet in her all-black Balenciaga number. She was accompanied by boyfriend A$AP Rocky whose look was reminiscent of a giant quilt.

The Met Gala is normally held in May, but this year it was pushed back due to Covid-19. Monday’s exhibit, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, was the first of a two-part exhibit. The second, In America: An Anthology of Fashion, will be unveiled in May.
