Once again, Beyonce slayed. Her “visual album” dropped April 23 on HBO and featured videos for 12 of the 13 songs on her new album, Lemonade. The sixth album that Queen B released was nothing but powerful and dreamy. It is one of her most personal stories to date that consists of visuals, spoken word and confessions.

The collection of her new album premiered via a mini movie on HBO.

Before the release of her visual album, Beyonce shared a cryptic trailer that consisted of lines such as, “The past and the present merge to meet us here, why can’t you see me?” Check out the trailer here.

Lemonade, is Beyonce’s most grown up album yet and discusses the ups and downs of her marriage. The first song on the album, “Pray You Catch Me” begins with the verse,

“You can taste the dishonesty

It’s all over your breath as you pass it off so cavalier

But even that’s a test

Constantly aware of it all

My lonely ear pressed against the walls of your world”

The chorus consists of lyrics such as, “praying to catch you whispering”, which hints at at her husband, Jay-Z’s rumored infidelity with Solange Knowles.

We all know that Queen B has had enough of this. She isn’t keeping quiet anymore. A vengeful string of songs follows suit as she traces her ups and downs of her marriage and downfall of the relationship.

If you have watched the visual album on HBO, you would definitely agree that this album is none other than a visual masterpiece. Lemonade shares videos from Beyonce’s childhood and of her husband.

According to New York Times, “the videos, heavy on Southern gothic imagery, are broken up with title cards that play on the Kübler-Ross model of grief — intuition, denial, anger, apathy, emptiness, accountability, reformation.”

Beyonce’s heartbreak is portrayed by images of her drowning in a ballroom, and swinging a baseball bat smashing car windows. The video also pays tribute to the black lives that have been lost and showing the mothers of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown sitting with a portrait of their  respective sons.

The visual album is filled with images of female solidarity, of family as well as Southern and African roots which can be found in the video for “Formation”.

Special guests were invited to work on the project with Queen B as well. Selena Gomez, Zendaya, The Weekend, Kendrick Lamar and James Blake are among those who make guest appearances in Lemonade.

According to New York Times, the title of the album, Lemonade, came from a family gathering which can been seen in the visual album.

Lemonade, is out now and available on iTunes and to stream on TIDAL.
