Compared to recent years, 2015 has been an all-time high for the box office.
According to IMDb, four 2015 films have made it into the top 10 worldwide grosses in box office history. These four movies were “Jurassic World,” “Furious 7,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Minions.” However, these movies had tough competition with other successful films such as “Inside Out,” “Ant-Man” and “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
However, the year is not over and there are still many big name movies that hope to break even more box office records this year.
Here are the biggest remaining movies of 2015, from Thanksgiving week to Christmas:
“Creed” (opened Nov. 25)
Starring Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone, this movie is an add-on to the “Rocky” franchise. Adonis Johnson (Jordan) is the son of the former late boxer, Apollo Creed. Johnson travels to Philadelphia, where he meets former heavyweight champion, Rocky Balboa (Stallone). Balboa was a close friend of Creed, and at Johnson’s request, Balboa decides to become Johnson’s trainer and mentor.
“The Good Dinosaur” (opened Nov. 25)
As Pixar’s second release this year, this lighthearted movie sets up a universe where the giant asteroid that killed the dinosaurs actually misses Earth, and the dinosaurs never went extinct. The main character is Arlo (voiced by Raymond Ochoa), an apatosaurus that befriends a small human child he names “Spot.” Together, the two go on an adventure of self-discovery.
“In the Heart of the Sea” (opens Dec. 11)
Starring Chris Hemsworth, this movie is based on the true story from 1820 of a whaling ship and its crew who were terrorized by a giant sperm whale. The incident destroyed the ship, and left the surviving crew members stranded for 90 days at sea. This true story also inspired the classic book “Moby Dick” by Herman Melville.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (opens Dec. 18)
This is perhaps one of the most anticipated movie of 2015, and more and more people continue to jump on the hype train. According to Variety, the seventh Star Wars film is projected to have a $170 million opening weekend at the box office. No film has never exceeded $100 million in the month of December. Box-office analyst Phil Contqrino believes that “The Force Awakens” will surpass “Avatar’s” previously held record as No. 1 in box office history.
“It’s in the same spot as ‘Avatar,’ and ‘Force Awakens’ will hit $1 billion without blinking,” Contrino told the Hollywood Reporter. “If it’s really good, it could cross $2 billion.”
The film stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. Not much is known about the sci-fi space film, other than a continuation of the war between the Republic and the Sith Empire. In the film, Rey (Ridley) and Finn (Boyega) discover who they are and find their calling with the Force, as Kylo Ren (Driver) is the new leader of the Empire, whose goal is to finish what the late Darth Vader began. According to Cinema Blend, “The Force Awakens” is expected to open in over 4,000 theaters, on over 10,000 screens and have dibs on every IMAX screen in the U.S. for a month.
“Sisters” (opens Dec. 18)
This comedy stars former “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) cast members Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler. The comedy duo play two sisters who decide to throw one last house party before their parents sell their beloved family home.
“Joy” (opens Dec. 25)
Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro team up in a wild story of a girl who becomes a woman and the owner of self. The trailer portrays the movie as more of a drama, but on IMDb describes it as a comedy that plays on many different emotions such as betrayal, loss of innocence and love (and its scars). maybe reword this sentence. This doesn’t seem to show the reader that we have done research by using seems like. maybe cut the line of doesn’t give the viewer a direct story…
“Concussion” (opens Dec. 25)
This sports drama is based on the true story of accomplished pathologist Dr. Bennett Omalu (played by Will Smith), who uncovers the truth about the effect of brain damage and concussions suffered by football players. Omalu’s findings pose as a major threat to the NFL, and they try to trump his findings in order to cover up scandals within the NFL. This film is not expected to be soft on the National Football League, and can possibly have a major influence in the sports world through concussion protocols needed to make sports like football safer.
“The Hateful Eight” (opens Dec. 25)
Directed by Quentin Tarantino, this western film stars Kurt Russell and Samuel L. Jackson. In a post-Civil War setting in Wyoming, eight bounty hunters/killers seek refuge during a blizzard, before reaching a destination called Red Rock, where they are escorting a prisoner to be executed. However, these eight strangers find themselves involved in betrayal and deception, and realize that they may never reach Red Rock at all.
From dramas to family-friendly comedies, these movies are sure to please every type of moviegoer’s tastes. The end of 2015 may be near, but that doesn’t mean that the movies stop coming.
