Game One: Azusa Pacific 6, Hawaii Pacific 2
The first game of the set was led by a commanding performance from junior pitcher Josh Staumont, who threw seven innings and allowed two runs while striking out six.
At the plate, the Cougars were led by senior first baseman Jordan Brower, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs.
Game Two: Azusa Pacific 6, Hawaii Pacific 2
The second game of Friday’s doubleheader seemed to have the same rhythm as the first game, but this time it was Jacob Cage on the hill for the Cougars. The sophomore threw 6.2 innings, allowing just one earned run.
At the plate, junior Mitch Dergazarian went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.
“We pitched very well in both games, I think all the guys played well as a team,” said head coach Paul Svagdis. “It’s not a normal process for baseball, it’s what we do in college, and so to get two in a day against a good team is excellent.”
Game Three: Azusa Pacific 15, Hawaii Pacific 11
Game three turned out to be a slugfest, but Wyatt Wood was able to get through five innings while allowing just four runs en route to being credited with the win.
Daniel Martin hit his ninth and 10th home runs of the year in the win. The junior second basemen leads the PacWest, and his mark of 10 homers is double that of second place. Brower continued his hot weekend, going 3-for-4 in the game.
Game Four: Azusa Pacifc 1, Hawaii Pacific 0
In a game that went exactly opposite of its predecessor, the Cougars were able to notch the game’s only run for a victory to seal the sweep.
Sophomore Mike Fairchild threw all seven shutout innings while striking out five. The Cougars’ lone run came in the bottom of the sixth as pinch-runner Austin Shives scored on a Ryan Santana infield hit.
The sweep improved the Cougars to 24-8 overall record and 14-6 in conference.
The Cougars have their next game on home turf on Tuesday, March 31 at 6 p.m. against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
