Azusa Pacific women’s basketball bounced back from a Saturday loss to Point Loma to edge the Dominican Penguins 75-71 Tuesday.

Neither team held more than a nine-point lead at any point during the tight contest, which featured six lead changes and four tied scores.

Five of those lead changes came in the first half after the Penguins closed in on the Cougar’s initial lead with a little over 11 minutes remaining. APU junior guard Cyndie Jones’ missed 3-point shot sent the team into the half down 34-33.

Junior forward Miriam Zabinsky scored 11 of her 19 game points within the first nine minutes of the second half, helping the Cougars take the lead with 17:19 on the clock. Aside from two tied scores, APU maintained a lead through the end of regulation, sealing the four-point victory.

Junior forward Kelly Hardeman posted her sixth double-double of the season with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Katie Powell rounded out the team’s top scorers with 15 points.

Dominican forward Allyssa Weatherd led the Penguins with 24 points, followed by teammate Carly Holboke with 14.

APU improves to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the PacWest. They Cougars will take on Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, California, on Dec. 18.

Men’s Basketball

The No. 22-ranked Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team claimed its ninth straight win in a 74-71 victory over Dominican on Tuesday.

The Cougars carried their 35-31 halftime lead into the second half, eventually extending it to 15 points with 5:48 remaining in the game.

Dominican rallied with a 22-10 run in those final minutes; however, it was three points short of knotting the score.

Senior guard Troy Leaf easily led APU with 28 points for the second time this season, while fellow senior guard Robert Sandoval contributed 10.

Three Dominican players ended the night in double-digit scoring, while the bench produced 22 points to the Cougars’ 24.

APU advances to 10-1 on the season and undefeated in PacWest play. The squad will travel to Belmont on Tuesday to take on Notre Dame de Namur,
