Mexican food lovers can grab a moderately priced bite to eat at the South Pasadena Señor Fish. Shrimp and scallop burritos, veggie quesadillas, tofu tacos and sizzling salmon are among some of the most delectable menu items.

Delicious Mexican food is right across the freeway in South Pasadena at Señor Fish. Although on the outside it can be easily mistaken for another hole-in-the-wall restaurant in an aging strip mall, experience has taught me that it is not wise to judge a book by its cover.

Upon entering the sparsely decorated restaurant, large chalkboards house the menu, which is written in multicolored chalk. Vaguely named items like “sizzling salmon” spark curiosity and intrigue the taste buds. Vegetarians and carnivores alike will delight in the savory pickled vegetables in the veggie quesadilla, and the perfectly seasoned tofu in the tofu tacos.

For those who have a taste for seafood, the shrimp and scallop burrito filled with rice, beans, cabbage, salsa, fried shrimp and scallops will not disappoint. The buttery taste of the fried scallops and shrimp combined with the spicy, tangy taste of the pico de gallo is a flavor combination that one must experience to fully appreciate.  In contrast, the sizzling salmon, which is much simpler in presentation than the shrimp and scallop burrito, is just as flavorful, if not more.  For this culinary masterpiece, a reasonable cut of charbroiled salmon sits atop a grilled medley of spinach, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms and minced garlic, served with a sesame vinaigrette (on the side) and three pieces of sliced toast. It is modesty at its most delicious.

If you’re looking for good Mexican food when you’re in South Pasadena, find Señor Fish and you can have a delicious meal for under $15.
