The No. 13-ranked Azusa Pacific women’s tennis team stretched its winning streak to five games on Monday, April 7 when it defeated Cal State L.A. for the second time in a week. The Cougars won by the final score of 6-3.

Azusa Pacific and Cal State L.A. traded wins for the first six matches, but after the Golden Eagles tied the game 3-3 when No. 39-ranked junior Leora Hemmerich defeated No. 22-ranked senior Emily Harris at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-4), the Cougars won the three remaining singles matches. Sophomore Lindsey Yeom clinched the victory for APU with her 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles.

Harris and freshman Natalie Johnson stretched their record at No. 1 doubles to 5-0 after defeating Hemmerich and sophomore Sydney Postal, 8-5. At the No. 2 doubles spot, Eagles seniors Samantha Sismundo and Sevana Zargarian beat sophomore Lindsey Yeom and junior Danae Ingwaldson 8-5. Cougar seniors Kim Koetterheinrich and Stephanie Quan closed doubles play with an 8-6 win over senior Tiffany Leung and junior Sonia Landeros. Koetterheinrich and Quan are now 4-0 as doubles partners.

During singles play, Eagles’ Postal tied the match 2-2 after defeating Ingwaldson 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3. Koetterheinrich answered with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sismundo at No. 6 singles and the Golden Eagles scored their final point of the match through Hemmerich.

After dropping the first set by the score of 5-7, Johnson defeated Landeros in a three-set match at the No. 2 spot (5-7, 6-3, 6-3). Johnson’s singles record is now 17-4. Quan won a three-set match as well, winning 4-6, 6-4, 4-4 against junior Victoria Vo at No. 5 singles after Vo retired from the match.

Yeom clinched the Cougars’ win with her three-set victory over Leung. This win was Yeom’s eighth win of the season.

With the win, Azusa Pacific improves to a 16-5 record. The Cougars have one remaining game in the regular season, which is scheduled for Saturday, April 12 against UC San Diego at 11:00 a.m. at the Munson & Bavougian Tennis Complex.
