More than 1,000 students took over Kresge Plaza on West Campus in a swirl of neon, animal print and masks on the evening of Friday, April 11. With glow sticks in the air and a disc jockey parked outside the Darling Library doors, the Office of Communiversity made West Campus a Zu.

The dance included a photo booth that printed pictures for students. The booth included a unique prop: a live snake, which sophomore applied exercise science major Nathan Lozano said was “awesome.”

He also said he really enjoyed the dance, the theme and the DJ’s choice in music selection.

“It was a good atmosphere that made everyone want to dance instead of just stand around,” Lozano said.

Zu Keepers, or student section leaders, junior international business major Jared Zoller and senior communication studies major Jon Root both attributed the success of the dance to Communiversity.

“The electric Zu was incredible. It seemed like everyone was having a blast, and that’s what the Zu is all about,” Zoller said.

Root said the unprecedented choice of hosting the dance on West Campus “set the bar for future dances and events on West Campus.”

“Plain and simple, Electric ZU was wild,” Root said. “It was a ZUpendous way to end the year and it was a blast to see all our hard work, along with Communiversity, pay off to give APU a night they won’t soon forget. I mean, who can forget taking a picture at the photo booth with a snake around their neck?”

According to the Office of Communiversity, some of the proceeds went toward student mission trips.

“As someone who is a part of Center for Student Action, I loved that the money went to this office,” freshman graphic design major Kayla Ross said. “I know how hard it is to fundraise for these trips, so a big event like this is going to be a huge blessing to all the teams.”

The next Communiversity event, The Last Bash on Friday, April 25, will serve as a break for students before finals week.
