Looking for a club or organization to join? There are currently 50 on-campus clubs and organizations, from the Step team to the Zu. Students can browse through the list of clubs to join or even start a new one of their own.
A list of clubs can be found here. Students looking for information on clubs and organizations may call the graduate assistant for clubs and organizations, Audrey Hale, or visit her in the Office of Communiversity.
Hale helps manage each group on campus by reserving locations for meetings and special events. She is also in charge of helping facilitate the financial needs of each group and runs the monthly Club President Council meetings.
Some students find out about clubs at Communiversity’s Student Club and Organization Fair, hosted every semester. Other students find information about existing clubs online or by word-of-mouth.
“Through my class page on Facebook, I [found] out about Underground Swing Club through a classroom discussion,” said sophomore chemistry major Alicia Hughes, who joined the group. “I also happened to have class with the club president freshman year, so that made it a lot easier.”
One new organization this year is APU Sustainability Club, which was started by sophomore political science major James Warren last semester. It caters to students who are dedicated to, or interested in, creating a more environmentally friendly campus.
“I believe that when God created the world, he gave it to us as a gift,” Warren said. “We don’t treat it as a gift sometimes. Sometimes we treat it as if it is ours to trash.”
Warren faces some obstacles with trying to receive approval to make actual changes toward a more environmentally friendly campus.
“Part of the problem with our club is that you can’t just do something. We have to go through a lot of approvals,” Warren said. “One of the new projects we are working on is cardboard recycling. … Some of the people we have to go through are [in hospitality] services and facilities management.”
Although Warren has dealt with some difficulty in starting a club, he still thinks it’s a good idea for students to either get involved in or to start their own group.
“Just go for it. The worst they can tell you is no. And they probably won’t,” Warren said.
Want to start your own club? Here’s how:
1. Go to Communiversity website: www.apu.edu/communiversity/clubs/forms.
2. Fill out the Advisor Packet, Club Requirements form and Club Application Packet.
3. Find a faculty member or staffer who is willing to help organize the club and mentor members.
4. Find a group of students interested in the idea. Each club needs at least seven members to be official.
5. Turn everything in!
