Azusa Pacific women’s basketball dropped their season-opener in an overtime loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars challenged the Broncos’ six-point halftime lead with a 9-2 run in the opening five minutes of the second period. After 11 lead changes in the period, Cal Poly tied the score 67-67 with 51 seconds on the clock.

Azusa Pacific wound the clock down in their final possession before a missed jumper by junior guard Sullivan Ziegler sent the game into overtime, where a 10-0 run by the Broncos brought the final score to 84-75.

The Cougars recorded a 42.2 shooting percentage with four players finishing in double-digit scoring, including junior guard Allison Greene, who posted a game-high 21 points.

Sophomore forward and PacWest Preseason Player of the Year Kelly Hardeman finished with 16 points and six rebounds. Junior forward Sendy Valles registered a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, followed by sophomore guard Elena Ala who went 2-3 at the 3-point line, tabbing six of her 12 total points.

Azusa Pacific will host the Crossover Classic this coming weekend with games against Western Washington Friday night and Seattle Pacific Saturday night.
