New and classic horror films you can watch this halloween season 

As Halloween approaches, spooky movies and shows are making their way to the screen. The original classics and new releases are all available to stream from home. Grab some popcorn and a friend because you won’t want to watch these alone. 

“Hubie Halloween” – Watch on Netflix

This comedy horror film follows the story of Hubie Dubois, a middle-aged man, who strives to keep his hometown, Salem, Massachusetts, safe every Halloween. But this year, a criminal on the loose and a mysterious new neighbor keeps Hubie on his toes. As people begin to disappear, he does whatever it takes to find the monsters behind the madness. Hubie, played by Adam Sandler, is a character you won’t want to miss this halloween season. Directed by Steven Brill, “Hubie Halloween” is rated PG-13 with a twist of both comedy and horror.

“Alive” – Watch on Netflix

Watch this South Korean zombie thriller about a man stuck inside his apartment, desperate to survive. Outside there is a deadly virus turning the population into zombies. Protagonist Joon-woo must learn to overcome loneliness in the midst of the chaos. This movie hits close to home as we are all overcoming a deadly virus in our world today. Rated PG-13 and directed by Cho Il-Hyung, this movie will have you feeling anxious and fearful for Joon-woo’s life. 

“Vampires vs. The Bronx” – Watch on Netflix

This Netflix original features the eerie takeover of vampires in NYC. With their town facing gentrification, a group of teenagers must gain the courage to fight these monsters and save their borough. Follow Miguel, Bobby and Luis on their path to overcoming the vampires. “Vampires vs. The Bronx”, directed by Osmany Rodriguez, is rated PG-13. Method Man and The Kid Mero are among the cast members.

“The Haunting of Bly Manor” – Watch on Netflix

Watch this chilling Netflix series that takes after its prequel “The Haunting of Hill House.” This second season follows the story of a young governess hired by a man to look after his niece and nephew. When she arrives at the Bly estate, she begins to see apparitions that proceed to haunt the house. Fans were told Bly Manor is a new chapter in the haunting series, referring to an updated collection of characters. Rated R, this second season will be based on the 1898 horror novella “The Turn of the Screw” by Henry James.   

“The Addams Family” – Watch on Netflix

This classic 90s movie features the Addams family. Each member of the household is odd in their own way. Whether it’s the long hair of Cousin It or the peculiar presence of Thing, you’ll be sure to feel the jitters around their household. Rated PG-13 and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, it features Angelica Huston, Raul Julia and Christina Ricci. 

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” – Watch on Disney+

Director Henry Selick created this classic tale back in 1993. Featuring fanciful clay animation, this film is both friendly and spooky. Follow the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown’s beloved pumpkin king, as he stumbles across Christmastown and plans to take control. Full of music and frightening characters, this movie is great to watch with the family. 

“Hocus Pocus” – Watch on Disney+

Follow three teenagers as they explore an abandoned house in Salem, Massachusetts. Upon discovering the house, Max Dennison accidentally unleashes a coven of evil witches who used to live in the home. With the help of a talking black cat, the teens must steal the witches’ book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal. Directed by Kenny Ortega and rated PG, this movie pokes fun in the spirit of Halloween.   

“Into the Dark” – Watch on Hulu

“Into the Dark” is an American horror anthology series. It premiered in 2018, and it now has two seasons running and consists of twelve feature-length episodes each inspired by a holiday. Both frightening and alarming, this series is perfect for the spooky season. Each episode was created by different directors and the series is rated PG-13. 

“The Shining” – Watch on Hulu

This psychological horror film dates back to 1980. Based on Stephen King’s 1977 novel, the film stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers and Danny Lloyd. We follow Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) as he becomes a winter caretaker at the Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Accompanied by his wife and son, strange supernatural occurrences take place when his son is plagued by psychic premonitions. Jack begins to transform into a homicidal maniac. The film is rated R.
