Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently announced they will drop all royal responsibilities and no longer be working members of the Buckingham Palace moving forward. The public buzz behind this has been massive, with both positive and negative reactions.
Millions have taken to social media to critique the controversial decision of stepping back from the spotlight and completely turning in their royal duties to become independent.
Markle has had a rough journey in the press since marrying her prince charming, with even harsher critics in the UK. Her criticism stems from a variety of reasons, including her identity in being biracial, her past marriage, her acting career or even the simple fact that she is American.
Being a part of one of the most important families in the UK, many people all over the world had the ability to watch Prince Harry grow up into the man he is today. Many blame Markle for this decision and claim this was the plan all along, to take the fame and make a name for herself, all while avoiding taking on the accountability of the royal Duchess of Sussex.
Prince Harry defended his wife during his speech at a charitable dinner last Sunday.
“You’ve come to know me well enough over all these years to trust that the woman I chose as my wife upholds the same values as I do,” he said. “She’s the same woman I fell in love with.”
He went on to explain that this difficult decision stems from the challenges he and his family had been facing over the past few years, including online attacks.
“I hope that helps you understand what it had to come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known, to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life,” Harry said.
What does this mean? As the not-so-royal-anymore couple steps down from their duties, they are no longer able to use their HRH titles and they will no longer be obligated to work with the royal rota moving forward, a group of British journalists who report on all the royal family matters.
The Sussexes have made it clear that they still wish to support the royal family as well as the charities and patronages they’ve been working with in the past. Leaving many curious to see how that will look, as they work toward becoming financially independent and taking on some other jobs too.
Before ending his statement, Prince Harry emphasized his gratitude to the queen by reminding the audience that she “took [him] under [her] wing” when his mom, Princess Diana, passed away 23 years ago.
“My hope is that one day our collective support for each other can be more powerful because this is so much bigger than us,” he said to the Queen.

The couple has shared their plans of balancing their time between the UK and North America. There have been rumors of them potentially moving to Canada, where Markle used to live before all the Royal chaos, or even California where Markle’s mother currently resides. The will to keep a genuine, happy, peaceful life to share with his wife makes Prince Harry a very strong and commendable person. He chose what was best for his family, the happiness of his wife and son, rather than accepting society’s negativity and living an unfulfilling lifestyle.
