November through February marks some of the best moments of the year: Thanksgiving, Christmas and perhaps most importantly, the season of awards shows. From Golden Globes to Oscars and everything in between, this is truly the best time of the year. If you’re not an active consumer of pop culture, music video aficionado or weekly moviegoer, this season may not stand out in your mind. However, if you want to expand your horizons and enter the world of awards shows, here’s everything you need to know:

What shows do I actually need to watch?

Since we are entering the middle of award show season, many of the “biggies” have come and gone, such as the Golden Globe Awards and Screen Actor’s Guild Awards. Make sure to catch these next year during December and January.

Don’t worry, though, the best is yet to come. Start preparing now for the 87th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 22, airing at 4 p.m.

What can I expect from the show?

This year’s host is a returning favorite, Neil Patrick Harris. While it is rumored that last year’s host and crowd-favorite Ellen DeGeneres was the top pick to host this year, Harris will definitely bring the fun, light-hearted humor that makes this show unique. Get ready for performances from Tim McGraw and John Legend – not together, don’t worry.

How do I host the best award show party?

An absolute necessity in hosting an award show party, especially an Academy Award party, is the ballot sheet. Print out one for every guest and make your predictions for what will win in top categories like Best Motion Picture, Best Actor in a Featured Role and even Best Animated Feature Film (Big Hero 6, obviously).
